No Technology Blogpost

Your second blogpost for this week is to not use Communication Technology for 24 hours. Communication Technology includes:

1. Cell Phones/Telephones/Texting
2. Internet (message boards, IM, blogposts, Facebook, Myspace, etc.)
3. Television
4. Radio

Since your generation defines itself as being a very "tech-com" generation, think about what becomes important once you take away the technology that defines you. What effect does that have on your life? What experiences do you have without these communication technology? How do you see the world differently? Your blogpost will consist of these type of reflections.

I will be looking for at least a substantial blogpost this time. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it should reflect your experiences without communication technology.

Some caveats to this assignment:
1. Make sure you put up one blogpost that says "start" and then, when the 24 hours is over, put up another blogpost that says "end" and then begin your reflection. I want you to put up both blogposts so I can see the time signature of the blogpost so I know you spent a full 24 hours without communication technology.

2. Let people know ahead of time that you will be without communicaiton technology for a while. If you need to talk to family or significant others, set up appropriate times. I don't want you to miss out on your job or your family if it is important. Just be aware of the assignment and keep the "spirit" of the assignment. If you feel that it goes against the spirit of what we're trying to do, find an alternative.

Have fun with this assignment! And make sure you reply to this message after your done with your assignment.

(PS. Make sure you do the other blogpost below too. If you still haven't finished the previous blogpost, make sure that that blogpost is finished before this blogpost).

So I survived! It was not that bad. The hard part was not having the music. I really don't need half of the technology I own!

I Started Saturday at 4:30 p.m., unfortunately my computer crashed Saturday so I couldn't post my start time, and I had no access to another computer unless I came to campus and went to the library.

I didn't use technology again until Sunday at around 6p.m.
At first I was really pissed off that I wouldn't be able to use "technology" for a full 24 hrs. Having my computer not working helped though, even if I wanted to I couldn't go on to check my e-mail/facebook/myspace, which I constantly check. I also called my family and close friends to tell them I'd be without technology for a day so if I don't respond they shouldn't freak out. The first couple hours weren't bad, probably because I drove a half hour to campus to take a math test, then drove about an hour to St. Pete to hang out with a friend. I was very tempted to text people, which is what I usually do when I'm bored, or just because, but i stayed strong and fought the urge. Once I arrived at my friends house the rest of the project/assignment was simple. My phone ended up dying not long after my arrival so again I wouldn't use it even if I wanted, and when it wasn't dead, I don't receive service in my friend's house. While "away" from "technology" I enjoyed a nice quiet dinner that my friend took me out for, and a walk on the pier and the beach. It was very peaceful and relaxing and I didn't have the distractions of text messages or phone calls. Going without technology sucked at first and I really didn't want to do the assignment, but in the end it wasn't that hard after all. There's more to life then "technology" and it's always nice to realize that and just take a walk on the beach or actually have a real conversation with someone. I had an AMAZING weekend even though I was without technology for about half of it.

Finish .... (couldnt get to a computer when the 24 hours are up).. I started November 9, 2008 around 10:00 A.M.
My day without technology was very difficult. Before my dreaded 24 hours i made sure to text and check my email and facebook, after i started I often found my self out of habit looking through my purse or reaching into my pocket to check my texts. The hardest thing during the day was not being able to use my cellphone. I use my cellphone as a planner, internet, text, entertainment (games)and phone (all in one), so needless to say without it i felt a little lost.Overall i survived the day,but i never plan to be without technology again! Technology most definitly impacts this generations life.
